Student ✷ Testimonials
Yara Mohammed - Grade 11 Percussion Section Leader
"Being part of the Woodlands Music Program really makes me feel like I belong somewhere in this school, and that I have a family who shares my passion in music. In just two years, I've had so many memorable experiences, growing both as a musician and as a person.
I'm so grateful to Ms. Jack who fosters growth in every student and really ties our community together. She's helped me so much and given me opportunities to develop my skills inside and outside of school (notably helping me get into the MSYO which was a goal of mine!) I look forward to every morning rehearsal, sectional and after-school practice session.
Performances especially are so exhilarating and give you a sense of pride, accomplishment and communion afterwards. It's the most gratifying thing in the world to practice the talents that make you special and blow everyone away alongside good friends."
Jasmine Tao - Alumni, Clarinetist
"music is about the unwavering support and community that everyone brings to the table. its about jamming, making friends, and creating memories with as much music as possible. from 7 am band rehearsals to exciting once in a year competitons, everyone will feel a sense of family as they get to know their peers and their instruments better."
Sahaj Dixit - Grade 12, French Horn Section Leader
"I do not know what I would be doing in high school if it wasn't for the music program. Thanks to this program, I have found a hobby that genuinely gives me fulfillment in my life and that in can be proud of, which I can't say I had before. Most of the enjoyment I have had at high school has been in band or with my friends from band, of which I have found many. In particular, our trip last year to New York . I have always wanted to go to New York, and to do so with some of my favorite people will be something I remember for the rest of my life. I am grateful for everyone in this program who has taught me, has been taught by me, and has played alongside me. The band room is essentially my second home, and this program my second family."
If there is anything that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"Whenever we go on a trip to a place like New York or Niagara falls, there is always some of us who aren't able to go because of the cost of the trip. This trips are always defining moments of my time at high school, and it really sucks that we have to leave some people behind and perform without a full band. I really wish that these trips could be made a little cheaper so that more people would be able to go."
Julia Wang - Alumni, Flautist & Piccoloist
"The senior concert band is honestly one of the brightest highlights of my highschool life. I love that you can tell everyone loves not only the music but also each other. I don't know about everyone, but I've long since stopped being afraid of messing up because band has become that safe of a place."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"Larger risers."
Mattea Ma - Grade 12, Flautist
"In grade 9 I wasn't a band student. After hearing the senior concert band play during the Remembrance Day assembly I headed straight to guidance to add music to my timetable. Most of my friends are in music and has really enabled me to build connections and community with my fellow students."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"I would get a bass flute!"
Leon Cai - Grade 12, Clarinetist
"The woodlands music program deliberately evolved my musical passion, and opened so many opportunities for me to experience great things and improve myself as a musician. I love playing beautiful music with this incredible band and performing is even more thrilling! My favourite moment is during our New York trip when we played City Trees, I actually felt the music pulsing through my entire body."
Xinyu Tao - Grade 10, French Horn Player
"Joining band was honestly more than just music: the community was something I appreciated the most. Sure having to play music was amazing, but having others by your side, especially people rooting for others in solos in Jazz Band is awesome."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"I would prefer maybe for something small to eat or drink for morning band students (waking up at 6 and getting to school at 7, everyone's very sluggish). Maybe a small cup of hot chocolate/coffee and a granola bar set out before morning band. A way to "fuel up"."
Yajas Bathala - Grade 10, Tubist
"Although my time in the Woodlands music program has been short, it has been indubitably influential. I had an amazing experience both in the Instrumental Music course and Music Repertoire course. Both teachers, Mrs. Jack and Mr. Mootrey, have been incredibly supportive through our collective journey and have shown me a new perspective on things. Going into highschool, I was never really a fan of music. However, this music program, especially Mrs. Jack, have completely changed my mind and I now plan on continuing music throughout the next 4 years. My most memorable moment was definitely from Intermediate Band, when we won Silver+ for our efforts in GHMF, seeing our months of work come to a final, rewarding culmination."
Wenya Wang - Grade 12, Flute Section Leader
"The band community has been irreplaceable at school - some of my closest friends are people I never would have met without connecting through the music program. I'm especially grateful for the sense of belonging the music room brings, and the hard work of all my classmates and teachers. Band is awesome :)"
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"New percussion instruments would be great, as many of them are decades old and hard to play."
Isaac Chu - Grade 12, Clarinet Section Leader
"Joining band has completely transformed my life. Everything is great here. Ms. Jack is funny, everyone is friendly, and I honestly can't think of anything I don't like about band (other than practicing). I always enjoy going on festivals with the rest of the band and making music for others to hear. I don't know if she hears it enough but I'm super grateful for Ms. Jack. Who knew music could be funny?"
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"Maybe extra chairs. The cafeteria chairs don't feel the same as the dedicated music ones."
Jayden Maharaj - Grade 12, Trombonist
"Band changed me as a person because it encouraged me to be more social with others. I am an extremely introverted person and I find it difficult to interact with others, but when you're playing next to people who are playing the same instrument as you, its quite easy. The most memorable moments are the concerts, whether it be the snow show/springfest or just any general music festival. I'm grateful for the detailed personalized feedback I receive from teachers."
Donald Li - Grade 12, Tenor Sax Section Leader
"I love band so much. Playing my sax is one of my favorite things to do, and is one of my main hobbies. Playing at festivals are so cool, as well as getting to watch others perform."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"The trombone section's tuning."
Kamila Solowianiuk - Grade 11, Trumpet Player
"I was already into music before I joined band, but when I joined grade 9 intermediate band, my love for music grew. band helped me make more friends and gave me opportunities to try new things like going to competitions and morning rehearsals. I am grateful for Mr. Mootrey, Ms. Jack, and all the band members who come in early and work hard to make band a fun place."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"Band is already awesome, but I think it would be nice if we could go to more competitions!"
Solomia Kosarenko - Grade 12, Bassoonist & Low Winds Section Leader
"Joining the Woodlands Music Program was one of the best decisions I made in high school. Starting as a beginner in Grade 9 taught me the value of discipline (in order to get better you must regularly practice) and I learned how to push myself to accomplish things I never thought possible, both individually and as a group. I'm very grateful to Mrs. Jack for starting me on my journey in Grade 9 beginner music, and being such a kind and fun conductor, teacher, and person."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"If there was one thing that could improve the Woodlands Music Program, I believe it would be more funding. It would be a great help both in terms of money for more instruments, instrument repairs, or going to festivals (as they're very expensive right now)."
Lesia Kosarenko - Grade 12, Euphonium Section Leader
"Learning a new instrument and getting involved in band was an amazing way to get involved and meet new people when I first came to the Woodlands, and from day one I learned the value of collaboration, precision and hard work. Our music program includes many concerts, competitions, and workshops with distinguished clinicians, and the music community invests a lot of time and energy to ensure that students can reach their full potential. Music can be challenging and it takes a lot of dedication to reach your goals, but the effect it has on you and your mindset is incredible, and our very supportive teachers and band members are there for you every step of the way."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"Ensuring free bussing to regionals which we did not have this year, also new instruments/repairs (if we get a third school bassoon that would be amazing to ensure that beginners have the chance to learn it without having to rent it out themselves)"
Nazar Kosarenko - Grade 12, Clarinetist
"Being a part of the band is a very fulfilling experience. Learning how to play music in an ensemble and the many skills involved in the performing arts is a great way to develop as a person. I've learned so many great lessons that can be applied to many different facets of life through my participation in the band, and it's what helps me the most out of anything in my life to be active, develop commitment, exercise my creativity and critical thinking, and most importantly of all, strive for success in my life and reach further than I otherwise ever would have tried.
The band has both taken me to great places, both figuratively and literally. It's really striking to learn and perform music at such a high level at such an early stage of my life - it's given me a taste of what it's like to be a professional. We, at The Woodlands have had the honour to meet and work with some rather remarkable musicians and educators - Jonathan Dagenais, Mark Caswell, Susan Barber Kahro, Leah McGray, and Jermie Ronald, just to name a few.
These seasoned, well-established professionals who we have the wonderful privilege to work with in festivals and workshops are super helpful in helping us improve our music and pick up new skills to help with specific quirks - for example, the "bop method" for finding out which instruments are the most important in a given section of a piece, strategies for sight reading, and a way to reliably tune by ear. These tidbits of musical knowledge really enhance my overall understanding of the field, and helps me build the big picture of music performance - even teaching me a few things about music theory, composition, and history along the way - that makes me appreciate composition and performance of repertoire even more.
Performing causally in front of our school and competitively at festivals alike is very gratifying, and is always a great thing to both look forward to and anxiously prepare for, bringing some spice to my life in a way that's entirely satisfying, rather than stressful. On top of that, the musical pieces that I get to hear at concerts are nothing short of magnificent.
It's in large part due to Woodlands Music that I have this honour. Even though our performances are serious, the band is very laid back and casual about 90% of the time - helped in no small part by our directors Ms. Jack's and Mr. Mootrey's keen senses of humour - making rehearsals, as well as really just any time spent together with the wonderful Woodlands Music community wholly enjoyable. I am very grateful for everyone that contributes their fun and good vibes to add to the band's joviality.
Thanks to them, contrary to what most of school does to us, the reward that the band experience for putting in the necessary work far outweighs the challenges. The band has also helped me grow as a person! The meticulous practice and preparation that we have to do to stay on top of things has taught me the value of responsibility and commitment. Plus, the fact that we can always expand the scope of our self-fostered development as musicians opens up rewards for initiative, and gives those who are ready to go one step further chances to go the extra mile and learn a technique ahead of our usual skill, or play a piece beyond our band's level, or play an unfamiliar scale pattern five BPM faster, or anything, really.
The ability to go wherever we want to go with our individual practice alongside the repertoire that we are tasked with playing is quite liberating. In addition, being in the band has given me a taste of what truly living in the real world is like, and opens up a ton of doors for musical adventures - everything from concerts to master classes to participation in performances myself - that will no doubt make my life much more fulfilling. Participating actively in the worldwide music community is... well... just really cool.
I have the honour of being in of one of the best high school concert bands in the entire country. It's so accessible, too, as an extension of school. I'm able to participate in it having literally just started playing my instrument from scratch when I first came to this school in ninth grade. That fact is just unbelievable, and it's a striking testament to the power of the music program as a vital cornerstone bridging the otherwise long, scary gap from elementary and amateur music to professional music.
All of this isn't even grazing the surface of the exceptional thrill and outstanding enjoyabilty of the overnight field trips that we get to go on as a band, which are by far my most memorable and impactful moments in the band. In the three years under my belt so far, I've had the opportunity to go on excursions to Niagara Falls, Chicago, and even New York City to both perform at prestigious national festivals. In the festivals themselves at which we perform, I always learn something new about music and get a new perspective on something about it. These trips serve as glorious respite and rejuvenation from my darkest moments - even within the trips themselves - that, no matter what goes wrong, always leave me fresher, brighter, and more rational, but also more appreciative of the fun things in life, than every before.
All in all, band trips are packed to the brim with sheer awesomeness! They're easily the coolest events of my entire life. Music itself can be really moving, and inspires us in ways that little else can. The community that's been built in this school around music is very passionate. I've made many great friends along the way. Overall, the band is the best thing that's ever happened to me."
If there is one thing that would improve the music program, what would it be?
"The band's overnight music festival field trips, superbly fun and educational as they are, come at a hefty price. In order to come along and experience their wonders, every single individual in the band has to forfeit hundreds or even thousands of dollars every year to cover the cost. It's so worth it that it's practically a steal - but, unfortunately, not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to afford this exceptional privilege. If there's one thing that would help uplift the music program to give everyone the opportunities that they deserve as hardworking members of the band, it would be to enrich Woodlands Music with the monetary support it needs to cover at least the bulk of the band trips' hefty price tag."
